Eye care for computer users

Eye care for computer users

Most of our work is done on computers, and there is usually no escape from it. It is a visually intensive task and, unfortunately, our work pressure and lifestyles do not give us the opportunity to be kind to our eyes. Which is why these tips should come in handy.

i. Know your eyes

Tears: The first line of defence, they also serve as lubrication by keeping the eyes moist and nourished; they also have a corrective lens function.

Eyelids: Their main job is to protect your eyes from dirt, dust and harsh light.

Eyelashes: A protective net for your eyes.

Cornea: A refractive zone that guides light to reach the retina.

Pupil: Controls the amount of light that enters your eyes.

Lens: A refractive zone that also guides light into the retina.

Retina and Optic Nerve: A bunch of intricate wiring that carries vision signals between your brain and eyes.

ii. Exercise your eyes

Dr Harish S Belvi, a practising ophthalmologist (eye specialist) based in Mumbai, says that regular work hours should be infused with short breaks. During such breaks, he suggests a small and easy exercise: "First, blink your eyes several times. While you keep your eyes closed, roll your eyeballs both clockwise and anticlockwise and take a deep breath. Gradually open your eyes while releasing your breath. This exercise lasts for a minute and you can repeat it three times before getting back to work." It serves as a good workout for the eyes.

iii. Look away

While working for long hours, look at distant objects either in your office or outside. Looking at a distant object and then returning to your task helps your eyes focus better. Try taking such visual breaks for about five to 10 minutes every hour.

iv. Palming

Sit straight at your workstation and rub your palms against each other till you feel them warm. The warmth of your palms helps soothe and relax tired eyes. Then, lightly cup your eyes with your palms and relax for 60 seconds. Count the seconds in your mind. Repeat this exercise two to three times whenever your eyes feel tired, or as often as you want. While palming, you can either rest your elbows on your desk or keep away from the desk and cup your eyes. Both ways are fine.

v. Splash water on your face

During breaks, splash water on your face while closing your eyes. This has an overall relaxing effect and helps you feel refreshed.

vi. Take a walk

After you're done with lunch, take a stroll outside your office for a few minutes. This will give your eyes a much-needed break and get them some fresh air.

vii. Use tea bags

Keep two used tea bags in the refrigerator before you leave for work. Once you are home, place the tea bags on your eyes for a few minutes as you relax. This not only soothes tired eyes, but also reduces puffiness.

viii. Drink water

Drink plenty of water. It helps reduce puffiness. When a person is dehydrated, especially in an air-conditioned office, the body starts storing water as a defence mechanism. This adds to puffiness around the eyes.

ix. Eat healthy

Incorporate Vitamins A, C, and E on a daily basis; eat citrus fruits, green leafy veggies, tomatoes, spinach, poultry and dairy products. Pack a box of chopped carrots, cucumber and fresh fruits and munch in-between meals at the office.

x. Know your contact lenses

"Ideally, a person who uses lenses should wear it for not more than 10-12 hours a day and occasionally for 14 hours a day," suggests Dr Belvi. Never wear your contact lenses while swimming. The pool water houses various micro-organisms as there are several people using it. This may lead to fungal infections in the eyes. In addition, the chlorine in the water can damage your contact lenses. "Lenses are like sponge, making them susceptible to attracting dirt," says Dr Belvi.

xi. Eye dos and don'ts

Visit your doctor

"One should ideally visit their ophthalmologist once a year, but if there is a problem with your eyes, visit sooner," suggests Dr Belvi. In addition, before buying an eye-care product such as eye drops, always check the expiry date and don't forget to check the prescription. It is always advisable to visit your ophthalmologist prior to visiting your optician. Remember, your ophthalmologist is trained to detect several other eye related diseases, apart from the reading of your eye power.Wear antiglare glasses while driving or at work"Antiglare glasses are mainly used for focused light -- such as full beam car headlights -- and serve well for night driving. These can also be used while working on the computer," says Dr Belvi. Using a pair of antiglare glasses while working on a computer can reduce the strain on the eyes to a certain extent. If you wear contact lenses, wear a pair of zero powered antiglare glasses for the same purpose.Use re-wetting eye dropsAn office environment that is predominantly air-conditioned, coupled with a computer intensive job, this is the perfect combination for dry eyes. In such cases, you can use re-wetting eye drops to give relief to your eyes. Why? "When dry eyes occur, the aim is to get the tears back into our eyes -- whether it is naturally (by simple blinking exercises), or artificially (if the problem aggravates)," says Dr Belvi. "Re-wetting eye drops have a similar in composition to natural tears. One should go for eye drops that do not have any preservatives. Eye drops with preservatives are toxic to the eyes in the long run. You can use re-wetting eye drops as and when required, but preferably span it to a minimum of four to six times a day. If the problem persists, visit your ophthalmologist as soon as possible."

The two most commonly used preservatives in all eye drops are Benz Alkonium Chloride and Chlorbutol. Read the contents of the bottle carefully and avoid eye drops with these preservatives.Reduce your smoking and alcohol intake"Smoking and alcohol consumption (either alone or combined) causes irreversible optic nerve damage. As both nicotine and alcohol are nerve toxins, they affect the nerves in the long run. Over a period of time, this can lead to poor or weak eyesight," warns Dr Belvi. Never rub your eyesIf dirt enters your eyes, do not rub as this may cause the dirt to stick inside. "Blink several times to start your tears flowing; this will help flush out the dirt," advises Dr Belvi. "If you rub your eyes, the dirt particle will keep disturbing your vision and irritate your eyes. In such cases, seek your ophthalmologist's help immediately."Quick tipsShelf lifePreservative-free re-wetting eye drops have a shelf life of about a year, if the seal is unopened. Those with preservatives last around two years, if unopened Discard.

All eye drops should be discarded within a month after opening their seals. Once opened, the medicinal properties tend to deteriorate due to exposure to the external atmosphere, making it unsuitable for your eyes.Protective eye gearWhile driving, wear protective eye gear -- especially if you are wearing contact lenses (for night driving) or sunglasses with UV protection (for day driving). Make sure the gear covers the sides of your eyes as well.Being healthy is a personal choice and one has to work hard at it. A balanced diet, regular sleep habits, a balance between work and rest, ad exercises -- all play a vital role in restoring our health and helping us maintain our eyesight.

Emotional Stress

Emotional Stress: How Chronic Emotional Stress Can Ruin Your Health

By Dr. Ben Kim

Natural Health Care

Emotional Stress: How Chronic Emotional Stress Can Ruin Your Health";

What's the most powerful step you can take to dramatically improve your health?

My answer is this:

Learn how to effectively manage emotional stress

All of my clinical and personal experiences over the years have me convinced that no other factor has more influence over your health.

Not diet, not exercise, not even how much you sleep.

Why is emotional stress is one of the most significant causes of all chronic health challenges?

Because your body cannot defend itself against the damage that emotional stress quietly creates over time. Your body pays a heavy physiological price for every moment that you feel anxious, tense, frustrated, and angry.

I'm not suggesting that you should strive to never feel these emotions. Anxiety, tension, frustration, and anger all serve important purposes when they first arise. The danger is in experiencing these emotions on a chronic basis.

Emotional stress sets off a series of reactions in your body that involve your sympathetic nervous system, the portion of your nervous system that would increase your chance of surviving if you were to run into a mountain lion during a hike. In such a situation, your sympathetic nervous system would:

Speed up and intensify your heart and breathing rates, so that you could have more oxygen and nutrients available to your muscles to run or fight.

Divert the bulk of your blood supply to your large muscles groups to run or fight.

Slow or even shut down your digestive system so as to not waste blood, nutrients, and oxygen that could be used to run or fight.

Stimulate the release of extra glucose into your blood to give you a burst of energy, just as a cheetah's spleen gushes extra blood into its circulation when it needs a burst of acceleration.

Cause your adrenal glands to release epinephrine and norepinephrine into your system to increase cardiac output and increase blood sugar.

Stimulate the release of cortisol from your adrenal glands to increase blood sugar and energy.

Increase the diameter of your pupils to allow for more light to enter your eyes and more acute vision for fighting and running quickly on any type of terrain.

Clearly, it is to your advantage to have a healthy sympathetic nervous system, one that is capable of providing all of the functions listed above during physical emergencies.

What you don't want is for your body to experience all of the above on a continuous, low-grade level because of emotional stress.

And this is exactly what many of us are suffering from in today's hectic world.

Emotional stress is immensely harmful to your health because your body reacts to it in the same way that it would react if you came upon a wild mountain lion. Not always to the same degree, of course, but there's no question that your sympathetic nervous system increases its output whenever you feel anxious, tense, frustrated, or angry. In other words, whenever you feel stressed.

There's really no need to provide a list of health conditions that are partly caused by emotional stress, because every health condition is partly caused by emotional stress. Emotional stress always equals increased output by the sympathetic nervous system, which always equals accelerated aging and breakdown of your tissues.

So what can you do to effectively manage emotional stressors in your life and prevent them from creating health problems?

1. Breathe deeply and regularly

Doing so can actually decrease the tone of your sympathetic nervous system and increase the tone of your parasympathetic nervous system, which is the portion of your nervous system that promotes relaxation and good digestion.

2. Spend some quiet time every day in prayer, meditation, or a purposeful relaxation session

All three have been scientifically proven to facilitate a relaxation response in your body that can decrease blood pressure, decrease pulse rate, and improve blood circulation. Meditation and relaxation sessions can be greatly enhanced by listening to any number of audio CDs that are designed to facilitate optimal relaxation and mental clarity. The one that I use on a regular basis and highly recommend is called EarthRain.

3. Practice visualization

Almost all great athletes practice some form of visualization. As author Wayne Dyer says, "you'll see it when you believe it." Spend some time each day visualizing yourself going about your day in a balanced and emotionally poised manner. You can include visualization in your prayer/meditation/relaxation session.

4. Make sure that you are getting the nutrients that you need for a healthy nervous system

Your nutritional status can make all the difference between being able to handle a certain amount of stress without breaking down vs. quickly suffering health problems when faced with stress.

While it's important to your overall health that you eat a well balanced and nutrient-dense diet, for emotional health specifically, it is important to ensure adequate intake of B vitamins, Vitamin D, and two long chain omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA.

5. Be honest about your feelings

There's a reason why know thyself is a wise proverb/saying in virtually every culture of our world. Striving to know yourself and what you are truly feeling on a daily basis is absolutely essential to preventing unpleasant but genuine emotions from becoming chronic states. Anger, frustration, and anxiousness can all help to fuel personal growth and character development if you are honest with yourself and seek to discover their root causes.

One of the best methods I can recommend to increase your awareness of what you are truly feeling is journal writing. The rules are simple: no censorship, no possibility of another set of eyes being able to read your thoughts, just pure flow of thoughts from your mind and heart onto a piece of paper or your computer screen. Regular journal writing in this manner can be extremely beneficial to your emotional health.

6. Move your body

It's a well established fact that regular exercise is one of the best habits you can adopt that will help you avoid depression and stay emotionally balanced. It doesn't matter what kind of exercise you do. What's important is to be active and use your joints and muscles on a regular basis.

Don't make the mistake that many health conscious people make and fret over the percentages of carbs, protein, fat, raw food, and cooked food in your diet while neglecting the emotional stressors in your life.

Yes, eating fresh, nutrient-dense foods is good for your health. But eating fresh, nutrient-dense foods while feeling emotionally balanced and at peace is even better.

CAUSES OF CANCER

The number ONE killer in Singapore is cancer (followed by Heart Disease & Stroke). Not all cancers are the same. 1/3 is curable. 1/3 is preventable. 2 factors of cancer that cannot be controlled are AGE & FAMILY HISTORY.

Causes of cancer:-

1. Smoking is very often the main cause of cancer. It kills us silently and drains money from us quietly. There're 4,000 harmful chemicals (though in diluted form) in one stick of cigarette. Taking one puff is 600 times worst than inhaling the exhaust fumes from vehicles.

2. Some food that cause cancer are:

Barbecued Food

Deep Fried Food

Overheating Meat

Food that is high in fat causes our bile to secrete acid that contains a chemical which is a promoter of cancer cells.

Food that contains preservatives, too much salt or nitrates (e.g. Canned food, Salted egg & veggies, sausages, etc.)

Overnight Rice (where Aflatoxin is accumulated)

Food that is low in fibre: Our body needs 25 gm of both soluble & insoluble fibre daily. We must drink at least 1.5 litres of plain water a day.

Contaminated Food (e.g. moulded bread causes our body to secrete toxins that may eventually lead to liver cancer in the long run. Never eat bread that is kept in room temperature for more than 2 days especially in a humid weather like Singapore's.

3. Types of fat and which is the best?

Highly Recommended for Health:-

Olive Oil - The best of all oils. It does not absorb in our body

Fish Oil - Omega 3 (contained in NI's Circulytes) haspoly-unsaturated fat. It's good for our brain cells

Peanut Oil - It contains Vitamin E. A small dosage is recommended only.

Not Recommended for Health

Vegetable Fat - Palm oil is worst than coconut oil. It is high in cholesterol and highly unsaturated.

Coconut Oil - It has saturated fat.

4. Specific Food & Beverages

Egg when eaten too much can cause High Colon Cancer. Risk Ovary Cancer, Prostate Cancer.

Cabbage is highly recommended for health reason.

Tomato is best eaten raw with a bit of olive oil for better absorption. Other alternative is to take tomato sauce.

Coffee is good because it contains 2 anti-oxidants. Inhaling the coffee aroma for half each day is equivalent to eating two oranges a day. However, the residue of over-burned coffee is extremely bad for health. It can cause cancer.

Tea, as long as it is in its original tea leaves and not processed into BOH or Lipton packets, it is good for health. Tea contains 30 anti-oxidants. Recommended dosage is 4 cups a day.

Exercise and be fit Have a balanced lifestyle. Exercise regularly.

F : Frequency: 3 to 5 times a week.

I : Intensity: Exercise till we sweat and breath deeply.

T : Types of exercises: Find one that suits our age, lifestyle, etc. Have regular check-up Once we reach the age of 45 & above, it is recommended that we go for regular comprehensive health examination. Early detection may save lives.

DANGER OF COKE & PEPSI (SOFT DRINKS)

For those of u who LOVE Cold Drinks like anything.

Just when you thought you knew everything.

1) To clean a toilet

Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl.

Let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean

The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

No scrubbing, no sweat - guaranteed.

2) To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers

Rub the bumper with a crumpled-up piece of aluminum foils dipped in Coca-Cola.

Much economical than the stuff from Smart Shop.

3) To clean corrosion from car battery terminals;

Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

4) To loosen a rusted bolt

Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

5) To remove grease from clothes

Empty a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle.

6) The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield. Hey, what do we have here? The world's first soft drink disguise as a multi-purpose cleaner? Or should it be a multi-purpose cleaner disguise as a soft drink!!! Besides that, If you pour Coke (yes, the soda) on a slab of pork, wait a little while, you will SEE WORMS crawl out of it. AND WE DRINK THIS STUFF!

Coke & Pepsi ALARMING FACTS!!!

The average pH of soft drinks, e.g. Coke, Pepsi is pH 3.4. This acidity is strong enough to dissolve teeth and bones! Our human body stops building bones at around the age of 30. After that it'll be dissolving about 8-18% of the bones each year through the urine, depending on the acidity of the food intake (acidity does not depend on the taste of the food, but on the ratio of potassium / calcium / magnesium / etc. to phosphorus). All the dissolved calcium compounds accumulate in the arteries, veins, skin tissue, and organs. This affects the functioning of the kidney (kidney stones). Soft drinks do not have any nutritional value (in terms of vitamins and minerals). They have higher sugar content, higher acidity, and more additives such as preservatives and colourings. Some people like to take cold soft drinks after each meal, guess what's the impact? Our body has an optimum temperature of 37 degrees for the functioning of digestive enzymes. The temperature of cold soft drinks is much less than 37, sometimes quite close to 0. This will lower the effectiveness of the enzymes and put stress on the digestive system, digesting less food. In fact the food gets fermented. The fermented food produce bad smelling gases, decays and forms toxins, which are absorbed in the intestines, get circulated in the blood and is delivered to the whole body. This spread of toxins can lead to the development of various diseases. Think before you drink Coke or Pepsi or any another soft drink. Have you ever thought what you drink when you drink an aerated drink? You gulp down carbon dioxide, something that no sane person in the world would advise you to do. Few months ago, there was a competition in Delhi University "Who can drink the most Coke?". The winner drank 8 bottles and died on the spot because too much carbon dioxide in the blood and not enough oxygen. From then on, the principal banned all soft drinks from the university canteen. Someone put a broken tooth in a bottle of Pepsi and in 10 days it is dissolved! Teeth and bones are the only human organs that stay intact for years after death. Imagine what the drink must be doing to your delicate soft intestines and stomach lining! To all COKE / PEPSI LOVERS, think again the next time before you say " STOP".

Cleansing Skin Care

Gorgeous and flawless skin can certainly be possible with a proper skin care routine. Our skin is delicate and it is subjected to a great amount of wear and tear when we step out into the sun and have to battle the pollution levels. It is not only all the dirt and grime that can affect our skin; the amount of stress that we tend to encounter at our work place also affects the way our skin looks and feels. Three Basic Steps to Skin care:

Cleansing

Exfoliating

Moisturizing

You must also know the type of skin you have. This would determine your cleansing skin care routine. The basic types of skin are normal skin, dry skin, oily skin, combination skin and really sensitive skin. Your cleansing skin care routine would depend upon the kind of skin you have.

Tips for Cleansing Skin Care:

Cleansing Skin Care for Normal Skin: If you have normal skin, you would need to cleanse it at least twice a day with warm water. Normal skin is also the kind to give you least number of skin problems. Here's what you can do for cleansing skin care for normal skin- use rose water in the morning hours on your skin, this would help to refresh it. Use a light cream after this to gently moisturize it without your skin appearing too greasy. When you go to bed you can use a mild soap to wash off the dirt and grime. Use some light cleansing skin cream and massage it gently into the face. Dampen a bit of cotton and use this gently over your face to get rid of any dirt that tends to block the pores. You can even opt for a mild toner during the day to keep the pores tight and add a natural glow to your skin.

Cleansing Skin Care for Dry Skin: You need to be careful with dry skin as it tends to be flaky and also tends to be somewhat delicate at times. Use only light creams for dry skin, as these should not remove any natural oil while cleansing. Dry skin needs to retain the natural moisture. Use a light-exfoliating product that will remove the dry flakes to reveal healthy and glowing skin. Always massage gently into the skin especially around the eyes.

Cleansing Skin Care for Oily Skin: With oily skin one needs to be careful about the skin care routine. Any deep cleansing skin cream may add excess oil to the skin. You need to wash your face at least 2-3 times in a day and use moisturizers that do not make your skin look oilier. Use facemasks that help to maintain the right balance of oils for your skin. Exfoliating your skin with the help of some homemade packs or light face scrubs would also help you to have healthy and glowing skin.

Cleansing Skin Care for Combination Skin: A combination skin shows traits of dry skin and oily as well, in different areas of the face. For this, you will have to specifically choose products that are designed for combination skin. This would help you to get rid of just the right amount of excess oil and replenish some amount of moisture in your skin.

General Cleansing Skin Care Tips for all Skin Types: Steaming your face can be a great way to clean your face. Heat a bowl of water and place it on the table. Cover your head with a towel when you bend over the bowl and be in this position for about 8 minutes. Use a towel with a slightly rough surface and gently brush it all over your face. Always massage cleansing skin cream gently into the skin with an upward motion. Rubbing hard will only cause your skin to turn red. Use some amount of milk and squeeze a bit of lemon juice in it. This also acts as a good homemade cleansing agent. Always drink plenty of water. Cleansing your skin is not just about the creams and face packs, but how you are from within as well. Pat your face dry. Do not ever rub your skin after washing. Use homemade face masks as a better alternative over products that are full of chemicals. Sometimes the natural way may prove to be more effective as compared to what you may buy off the shelf.
